A Message to the Employees of the

Randolph County Sheriff's Office

To Randolph County Sheriff's Office staff and deputies, I would like to thank you for your hard work and dedicated service to the citizens of Randolph County. I have worked with most of you in the past and I understand the importance of teamwork within the department. As a 30 year veteran of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, I chose to remove myself from the promotional system in order to remain a resident of Randolph County.

As your Sheriff, I will welcome any new ideas or concerns that you may have. The success of our Sheriff's Office is dependant upon an open line of communication from the bottom to the top - not from the top to bottom.  We must work together as one complete team, but make individual decisions based on policy and law. By doing this, we will insure that we do our best to keep the 145,000 citizens of our great county safe.

Leadership is a quality that is learned and cannot be taught. Leadership is establishing a clear vision and sharing that vision with others. A leader will provide the necessary instruction and methods (tools) so that others will follow with the same goal in mind. Leaders will not shy away from making decisions. I pledge to you that I will make decisions that will benefit you, your family, and the community.

When I was employed with the state highway patrol I was considered by many of my peers as a Trooper’s Trooper. I volunteered to do the jobs that were not as attractive to others within my rank. My goal during my career was to be respected by the troopers I worked with, and to treat everyone with respect no matter where they came from in life.  Doing this allowed me to be respected by my supervisors and others in our county and cities.

I understand first-hand the difficulties of your job and balancing your family life. I will always put serving our citizens, you, and your family as PRIORITY ONE in my administration. I know how much your spouse and children miss out on your life because of your scheduled shifts. To try to give you as much time with your family, I plan to look at permanent shifts to accommodate the needs of you and your family. There are many other departments throughout the state doing this same type scheduling.

I will encourage each of you to be a mentor, coach or just be a big brother/sister to children throughout our county. I have always been involved in my community and plan to continue my efforts in that area.

To the staff and deputies working at the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, it may be just a job. To our citizens, though, it is a service paid for by their hard earned taxes. They deserve the best available service be provided to them. All employees, including myself, will provide the best service possible in a professional and respectful way to each person we encounter while doing our work.

I pledge to each of you that I will work my hardest to make your job and duties as safe as possible. I have thought about running for the Office of Sheriff for many years and I have spent many hours praying to God to make sure this is His plan. I would be honored and humbled to be your Sheriff soon. Please be safe and may God bless each one of you.

"The best leader is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and the self-restraint to keep from meddling with them while they do it." -Theodore Roosevelt
